What links Leipzig, Berlin and Hamburg? Well, for one thing, each of the three cities is home to a growing number of young jazz musicians. They are masters of their instruments, but are not averse to some dirty hip-hop beats or some dub, rock and funk. Rocket Men, a trumpet and tenor sax plus drums, keyboards, electronics and guitar, are a prime example of a genre-transcending town-twinning arrangement. For this band, jazz is not a musical genre, it is a mindset.
The six musicians from three federal states describe their sound as “intergalactic jazz, drum & space”: a grandiose party melange that – thanks to literary and cinematic influences, and masterfully used spoken-word samples – also provides plenty of food for thought. Complex brass-band rhythms, soul dub and driving electro: an irresistible mixture to dance to.
