Ranky Tanky means “get funky” in the Gullah language. The Gullah culture, which originates from western Africa, has been preserved in the south-east of the USA to this day. In addition to a unique language and food culture, music naturally plays an important part – and that’s where the Ranky Tanky quintet, with their earthy sound, comes in. The band from South Carolina won a Grammy in 2020 for the best roots album. Ranky Tanky represents an original sound blending blues, funk and jazz – as well as traditional spirituals sang by Quiana Parler, with her uniquely powerful voice. The guys in the background – trumpet, guitar, bass and drums – have known each other for 25 years. In the USA, the five are becoming more and more famous with every passing week – in Germany they are barely known. But it’s only a matter of time until audiences on this side of the Atlantic fall in love with Ranky Tanky’s raw southern sound.
