Jazz is not a genre, it’s an attitude of openness – Omer Klein and Sebastian Studnitzky know all about that. The Israeli-born pianist Klein and the Berlin trumpeter Studnitzky are well-established, internationally acclaimed bandleaders and composers. Almost by accident in summer 2021, they gave a concert together near Klein’s adopted home of Frankfurt – and were surprised how well they work as a duo. “The music flowed so effortlessly that we sometimes almost laughed out loud,” says Klein. Since then, the pair have developed their programme to include lush cover versions of Thelonious Monk, Stevie Wonder and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as their own compositions. For these two exceptional jazz musicians, a concert is a tightrope act: an appetite for risk and a spirit of exploration are part of the package when they improvise together.
