The Hamburg-based octet uses the size of the ensemble to create new, smaller groups for individual songs – from an intimate dialogue between voice and acoustic guitar to the full group sound. In addition to saxophone and flute, the ensemble features vocals, trombone/bass trumpet/euphonium, piano, guitar, double bass, percussion and drums.
The Nordsnø Ensemble blends Scandinavian folk music with modern jazz: mystical moods meet spherical soundscapes and hypnotic rhythms. A new element in the ensemble’s work is the folksy, intimate voice of Swedish singer-songwriter Anna Arco, which has also been described as being, at times, “almost Bhangra-like in style”. The ensemble’s current programme has been developed around Arco’s vocals, which carry audiences away to the vast, open landscapes of the far north, giving them a brief moment of magic away from the reality of day-to-day life.
