Julia Hülsmann & Christopher Dell
Christopher Dell is a man of many talents – unusually so. He studied the vibraphone, percussion and composition; he has taught architectural theory; and he is the director of the Institute for Improvisation Technology in Berlin. As a musician, Dell won countless prizes in his early twenties. “For sheer invention there aren’t many contemporary vibraphonists who can match him,” writes Jazzwise Magazine.
With Dell now invited by Artist in Residence Julia Hülsmann to perform as a duo, not only do two percussion instruments meet, but also two intellectual musical geniuses who complement each other rhythmically and harmonically. Speaking about the balancing act between complexity and accessibility, Christopher Dell says: “You shouldn’t overchallenge the audience. But Julia and I have worked hard to develop our complexity – it’s what we do day in, day out. And it’s our gift to people!”
