When it comes to jazz, there is a lot going on in Hamburg. The city has a long tradition of jazz – it is home to a lively and colourful scene that draws inspiration from very different musical cultures and sources. The vitality of the scene is clear from the more than 100 concerts held each month – a melting pot of styles and genres in which the local scene is exposed to guests from further afield. There are some outstanding musicians living, working and studying in Hamburg.
The Hamburg Jazz Prize is awarded to Hamburg musicians who are making a particularly qualified artistic contribution to jazz music, whose lives and work are centred in Hamburg, and who champion the interests of jazz in the city.
The prize is awarded every other year during the ELBJAZZ under the patronage of the Jazzbüro Hamburg. The initiator of the prize is the Dr. E.A. Langner Stiftung.
