Jazz trumpet professor Frederik Köster subjects his band Die Verwandlung (The Transformation) to what can only be described as a Kafkaesque metamorphosis from one album to the next – without, however, waking up transformed into an insect-like creature and lying helpless on his back like the protagonist of the eponymous novella. Die Verwandlung’s first album (2013) takes the modern, minimalist chamber jazz approach and does away with all ballast; the second album (2015) presents additional elements from the realm of fusion, and that not only due to the extended quintet line-up; and Homeward Bound Suite(2018) surprises listeners with its atmospheric and monumental production complete with classical orchestra.

The next, still-secret metamorphosis by Köster and his band – featuring Sebastian Sternal on piano and Fender Rhodes, Joscha Oetz on double bass and Jonas Burgwinkel on drums, all of which are jazz prize award-winners – will be complete by spring 2019 in time for the premiere at ELBJAZZ.
