The man certainly has a sense of humour: Matt Andersen’s website is called stubbyfingers.ca, where the “ca” refers to his native Canada. It’s rare to see such self-deprecation in North America’s highly competitive blues circus, yet the singer and guitarist can afford it: his music is a wonderful blend of raw soul, muscular rhythm and blues, rousing folk and wistful Americana. The 2019 album Halfway Home by Morning, which was recorded live in Nashville, is already his tenth, and he has countless tours with greats such as Little Feat and Beth Hart under his belt. Andersen is also a familiar figure in Germany by now thanks to appearances on TV shows such as Inas Nacht and ARD Morgenmagazin. Not only does the Canadian singer have the voice of a great blues singer, he also plays the guitar with a rare sensitivity. Not bad for a guy with stubby fingers.
